This research utilises the qualitative approach focusing on ethnographic fieldwork as the main methodology. ![]() I analyse how the Jahai have transformed and yet maintained cultural distinction in pinloin. In this research, I examine the relationship between Jahai music, songs and dance, known as pinloin, with their belief systems, worldviews or socio-cultural-political systems. The change of livelihood from rainforest people to lake people have impact the Jahai’s traditional music and dance known as the pinloin. ![]() In the late 1970s, the Malaysian government launched the Temenggor dam project, which flooded the original homeland of the Jahai and resulted in the emergence of a man made lake and island known as Temenggor Lake and Banding Island respectively. Much of their musical heritage includes instrumental music and songs inspired by the flora and fauna of these areas. They were originally hunter-gatherers who resided in the Belum- Temenggor Forest areas, in northeastern Perak and northwestern Kelantan. The Jahai are one among 18 Orang Asli (orang: people, asli: original) groups in peninsular Malaysia.
